United by music - divided by disinformation
A workshop for journalists
The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) takes on a special significance as Europe grapples with geopolitical tensions. With its motto ”United by Music,” ESC celebrates the continent’s rich cultural diversity and tolerance – values more crucial than ever.
From ”Concert of Europe” to dissonance
The 19th century concept of the ”Concert of Europe” embodied a period of relative peace following the Napoleonic Wars. However, the past decade has seen a rise in discord: Brexit, the refugee crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine have fueled a tide of disinformation. Social media platforms and synthetic media further complicate the information landscape.
ESC and beyond: Navigating a complex media landscape
In the lead-up to the June 2024 European Parliament elections, the ESC becomes a powerful symbol of unity. It prompts us to consider how media and journalism can navigate this increasingly complex information landscape.
