Fojo Media Institute - our impact on the media industry:

Building bridges between media and academia

Fojo Media Institute, with its deep roots in journalism and close ties to academia, has since the beginning of 2023 become more closely integrated in the Linnaeus University (LNU) and its Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FKH) through various initiatives. This integration opens doors for Fojo to collaborate on education and research efforts, continuing to promote a thriving media industry.

The collaboration with LNU has intensified. Together with the Department of Media and Journalism, Fojo has developed a course in international media development offered in 2024.

Professor Andreas Önnerfors, Project Manager for Fojo’s Swedish fact-checking desk, SweFactCheck, recognises the value of Fojo’s practical perspective:

“Fojo’s real-world journalism experience is invaluable in discussions about local journalism’s role in local democracy. Our insights provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing journalism today, adding realism and weight to research.”

This collaboration is part of a broader investment in media research at LNU. The Linnaeus Media Observatory (LMO), established during 2023, focuses on media-related research, practice, and development, with Fojo as a key player.

Fojo also maintains a digital archive for local journalists and publishes a newsletter showcasing the best local journalism in Sweden, aiming to inspire even better work. By harnessing the power of academia and practice, Fojo and LNU hope to contribute to a stronger and more future-proof journalism landscape.

Two new publication series:

In 2023, Fojo launched two new publication series, Fojo Study Series for in-depth reports and Fojo Media Insights for shorter papers. Reports published with partners are quality-assured and accessible through the Swedish Research Council’s digital archive, DiVA.

IfDem (Questioned Democracy)

IfDem envisions a robust democracy where democratic values are deeply rooted among citizens. To achieve this, IfDem contributes ideas, creates meeting spaces, and generates new knowledge to address the challenges facing Swedish democracy today.

As part of the Kunskapsmiljö Linné (Linné Knowledge Environment), IfDem collaborates with Fojo Media Institute to investigate the conditions surrounding public discourse and political news reporting, aiming to strengthen democratic foundations.

Linnaeus Media Observatory (LMO)

Established in 2023, the Linnaeus Media Observatory (LMO), serves as a multidisciplinary platform for research, practice, and production in the media field.
