In the autumn of 2024, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities made the decision to establish the Linnaeus Media Observatory (LiMO), a new center dedicated to media research, practice and development. Now, LiMO is officially inaugurated and the Media Research Day is held at the Fojo Media Institute.
Located at the Fojo Media Institute in Kalmar, LiMO is the result of a close collaboration between the Department of Media and Journalism, the Linnaeus University Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies (IMS), and the knowledge environment “A Questioned Democracy and Digital Media Technology.” Andreas Önnerfors, Professor of Intellectual History and project leader for Faktajouren, is a key figure in this collaboration.
“LiMO will serve as a platform where research, practice and media production at Linnaeus University can meet across institutional boundaries and enrich one another,” says Önnerfors.
“For Fojo, with its deep roots in the Swedish, European and global media industry, this represents an opportunity to develop new and valuable knowledge. For researchers, the direct connections with journalistic practice will be invaluable for external collaborations.”
“Our immediate goal is to create a structure for active exchange of ideas that will generate joint projects. By pooling our resources, we will strengthen both Fojo and LNU, enabling us to address the evolving media landscape with greater expertise,” Andreas Önnerfors adds.
Throughout the year, research has been conducted within the framework of a pilot project on “Alternative Media Logic,” exploring the characteristics and functioning of alternative media and seeking a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. The research team will present their findings during the event. Additionally, Mette Bengtsson, a rhetoric researcher at the University of Copenhagen, will give a guest lecture on establishing truth claims in the public sphere.
