In-depth exploration thanks to Fojo’s training

Reporter Torbjörn Granström from the local news outlet Södertälje tidning participated on a course on investigating welfare crime at Fojo during 2023.

Torbjörn Granström, a reporter at the local newspaper in Södertälje, a small-ish town near Stockholm, participated in Fojo’s course on Investigating welfare crime during the spring of 2023. The course provided him with the opportunity to delve deeper into an ongoing investigation related to private dental clinics with extreme profit margins. The outcome was a series of concise articles that resonated strongly with readers and included several intriguing leads to follow up.

“I brought my investigation of the private dental clinics to the course, allowing me to focus only on that for several days—an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Back at the newsroom, new tasks constantly arise, making it challenging to find time for in-depth research. When I returned to the office, the work remained pending for a few weeks until I could finalise it,” says Torbjörn Granström.

Despite no clear fraud being exposed, Torbjörn Granström chose to highlight the substantial profit margins of private dental clinics and compared them to those of public dentists. By focusing on these issues, he aimed to raise awareness and engage readers, and received many reactions as a result.

The training provided the opportunity for in-depth exploration but also valuable tips and insights from fellow participants. Given the ever-evolving industry, Torbjörn Granström emphasises the continued importance of Fojos’ courses.

“I would most definitely attend another training. Fojo’s trainings have been indispensable in developing my own ideas and competencies over the years. However, they are also essential on a deeper level because continuous self-improvement is crucial in maintaining competitiveness in our field,” says Torbjörn Granström.

Mid-career training not only provides a chance to delve deeper into critical investigations but also helps build a community of continuous learning and growth within the media industry.
