“In this gathering I have learned that due to the advancement of technology, the world is changing at a rapid speed. It is critically important that African media learn to harness AI technology. I believe this will help us to be a positive influence in the continental and global media and information landscape,” said Dr. Abdisa Zeray, one of the Fojo-supported delegates from Addis Ababa University, after participating in the discussions at the The East African Communication Association (EACA) 2024.
Founded in 2011, EACA is a leading organisation dedicated to promoting communication studies in East Africa. Its members include scholars, researchers, and practitioners from universities across the East African region and beyond. It provides a platform for sharing research, exchanging ideas, and fostering collaboration in the field of media and communication.
The theme of the 2024 conference, which takes place at Dar es Salaam University, is on Africa and the global dialogue on media and communication and offers an opportunity for journalists and media professionals to:
- Stay informed about the latest trends and challenges in journalism.
- Network with leading scholars and practitioners in the field.
- Gain new insights and perspectives on the role of media in society.
- Contribute to the development of journalism in East Africa and beyond.
More than 200 papers were submitted and delegates from Fojo’s programme the Rwanda Media Programme, and Somalia National University and Addis Abeba University, as well as the other many participants, have the opportunity to discuss themes such as;
- The future of journalism in Africa
- The impact of technology on media and communication
- Media ethics and accountability
- The role of media in promoting social justice and development
