A new digital media centre enables students in Somalia to practice journalism

Somalia National University recently inaugurated a ‘Digital Media Center’ at their main campus in Mogadishu, marking an important step towards a more practically oriented journalism education.

The Digital Media Center is a significant step towards a practical and modernised journalism education that meets the demands of today’s media landscape. It includes a training studio for journalism students and is equipped with modern and easy-to-use cameras, microphones, studio lighting and computers for editing.

The first training held in the new center was a five-day training for both journalism students and working journalists in Mobile Journalism, conducted by Ahmed Absie from Green Media Initiative. Ahmed Absie has also capacitated journalism educators that are now ready to integrate the Digital Media Center and thus more practical assignments into regular journalism programmes at the university. 

The Digital Media Center is build with support from Fojo Media Institute.

Ahmed Absie led the first traning held in the new center. The Center allows for journalism students to practice what they learn through facilities such as easy-to-use cameras, microphones, studio lighting and computers for editing.
