Thematic area: Media content

Journalistic ethics prescribe fair, balanced and accurate reporting as a hallmark of professionalism. Yet, the age-old problem of underrepresentation and sexist portrayal of women based on their gender identity continues. The most recent edition of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP 2020) revealed that women are only a quarter of the persons seen, heard and read about in mainstream broadcast, print and digital news. The extent of gender stereotyping of women and men is as serious today as it was a quarter century ago; only 3% of stories clearly challenge such tropes. Gender inequality in media content is far worse than the same inequality in the physical world.

This page hosts research reports, editorial guidelines and other tools to drive change towards media output that reflects the world.
