Many activities at World Press Freedom Day
Every year, 3 May is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. To celebrate the day UNESCO this year is hosting a four day seminar in Jakarta investigating media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies.
Fojo and its partners in various countries have arranged and attended seminars or in other ways paid attention to the World Press Freedom Day.
In Bangladesh it was good media coverage as you can see above when Fojo was co-organizer of the Press Freedom seminar. One of the big questions for the day was that the limits for what can be published are greater online than in print.
Jaldeep Katwala, Project Manager, Southeast Asia at Fojo is in Jakarta and celebrated World Press Freedom Day together with our project partners.
One of the debates at the UNESCO seminar in Jakarta, “Journalists’ Safety and Tackling Impunity: How can crimes against media workers be addressed?”, is organized and moderated by Fojo´s partner International Media Support.
In Zimbabwe our partner MISA held a commemoration breakfast event in Harare to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day. Theme: "In Defence of Digital Rights". Speakers drawn from parliamentary portfolios committees that MISA has been lobbying for reforms of media laws in Zimbabwe:
1. Parliamentary portfolio on information and communication technologies
2. Parliamentary Media Committee
3. Parliamentary Legal Committee
