These challenges demand a new understanding of the role of journalism in society.<\/p><p>On this basis, we formulate our vision:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab84cdf elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"ab84cdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tThe public has access to the journalism it needs to make informed and sustainable decisions so that people have power over their lives and can, together with others, form sustainable, democratic, and inclusive societies.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-502be69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"502be69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Just as independent journalism is an inalienable part of democracy, Fojo sees it as an essential element of an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable society. We call this new way of looking at the role of journalism\u00a0sustainable journalism. Our points of departure are two concurrent sustainability crises:<\/p><ul><li><strong>The sustainability crisis facing society<\/strong>, related to climate change, poverty, inequality, and crumbling democracies<\/li><li><strong>The sustainability crisis facing journalism<\/strong>, which stems from an erosion of revenue streams, fierce competition from the global social media companies, restrictions of freedom of expression, media capture, disinformation and deteriorating public trust in the media.<\/li><\/ul><p>We view these two crises as intrinsically intertwined. A sustainable society \u2013 environmentally, socially, and economically \u2013 demands journalism that explicitly addresses the sustainability challenges faced by society.
