What happens in Turkey?

10 May, 2017

Can Dündar is a Turkish journalist, author and former editor-in-chief in Cumhuriyet. He now lives in exil and talked to the conference about what happens in Turkey.
In May 2016 Can Dündar survived an assassination attempt witnessed by multiple reporters in front of the Istanbul courthouse. Later on the same day, he was sentenced to five years in prison on a charge of "revealing state secrets", but he is appealing against the verdict.
He had earlier served 92 days on a charge of carrying out "an act of terrorism", only to be released when the constitutional court declared that it was "an act of journalism".
Can Dündar is the recipient of the International Press freedom Award 2016 from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
