Journalists in Somalia are constantly living under (death) threats, but despite this Abukar Aldabri, experienced media developer, researcher, communications expert and author, tirelessly works to improve the conditions for media in the country, not the least for female journalists. He has for some years worked with Fojo’s programme in Somalia and is partly based there, partly in Stockholm with his family.
With the help of Fojo, media houses in Somalia support the ”Gender Respect Declaration” and many stereotypes concerning female journalists have slowly been removed. Another success is the re-establishment of journalism training at the Somali National University, where 25 students recently graduated.

Strengthening objective reporting on the Somalian elections
“The biggest responsibility of a reporter during elections is to avoid issues that lead to hate and avoid using inflammatory language,” says Abikani Ahmed, Senior Producer at Radio Daljir. He is one of over 300 journalists from across Somalia who have been trained on how to ensure objective and nuanced election reporting.
