History

The Fojo Media institute was founded in 1972 as a government agency to strengthen the capacity of Swedish journalists. Since 1991, Fojo has also engaged in international mediasupport in Africa, Eastern and Central Europe, Asia, Latin America as well as the MENA region.
For more than 45 years of continuous operation, we have strengthened our partner organisations’ institutional capacity and trained more than 50 000 journalists from more than 100 countries.
Jointly with our partners and individual journalists we have engaged in a wide range of issues related to journalism and democracy, such as media convergence, business management, investigative reporting, fact checking, access to information and managing threats and hate speech. Capacity building also includes special themes such as gender, environment, conflict sensitivity, climate change, and corruption as well as safety and security.
Fojo’s headquarter is situated in Kalmar in southeast of Sweden. We also have an office in the capital Stockholm, as well as offices and representation in Bangkok, Dhaka, Harare, Yangon, Nairobi and Mogadishu.
